BANGALORE: The Malleswaram Dyslexia Association is conducting special camps to identify students with special learning disability or Dyslexia in Bangalore.

Prof K S Gopalan, president of the association, said Dyslexia is a neurological difficulty and, according to NCERT statistics, 8 to 14 per cent of schoolgoing children in India suffer from this disability. Gopalan said in the recent SSLC examination of 2010, of the over eight lakh students who appeared for the exams, about 300 (0.03 per cent) have been certified as having learning disabilities and of the 16 lakh students across the country who appeared for the CBSE exams, only 820 (.05%) students were certified as dyslexic.

Prof Gopalan said the Government of Karnataka has extended many concessions for such children but lack of awarenss leaving these facilities unutilised.

Gopalan said their association has taken up the case of these children and is conducting camps to identify these children, get them certified by competent authorities and get them the concession.They have started with Bangalore North Education district and will start the camp at Rajaji Nagar Block II (Government Middle School) near Rajah Nagar RTO office.
