MK calls for restoration of U Ve Swaminatha Iyer’s memorial

Express News Service

Hailing U Ve Swaminatha Iyer for his towering contributions to the Tamil language, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday urged proper maintenance of the memorial dedicated to the Tamil scholar at Uthamadhanapuram in Thanjavur.

In a statement Karunanidhi said U Ve Sa was single-handedly able to accomplish what should have been the work of an organisation. If not for the scholar’s unrelenting hard work, Sangam literature could very well have gone undiscovered. “The treasure that great men created 2,000 years ago would have dissolved in time (if not for his efforts),” he said. The DMK patriarch said the memorial established for the great scholar now remained closed for lack of maintenance. So he urged that action be initiated for proper upkeep of the place which was once the residence of U Ve Sa.
