MDMK charges municipality with polluting Bhavani River

Express News Service

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) has alleged that Mettupalayam municipality is draining sewage water into Bhavani River, without treating it. They petitioned Coimbatore District Collector M Karunakaran on Monday urging his intervention to prevent the river from being polluted.

In his petition MDMK Karamadai union secretary K Selvakumar said all the sewage water generated in Mettupalayam municipality limit was discharged into Bhavani River, because of which the river water has been polluted and now the entire river is filled with sewage water.

People living in Odanthurai, Chikkathasampalayam, Jadayampalayam, Pallipalayam, Elupalayam, Irumbarai, Chinnakallipatti, Mooduthurai panchayats and Sirumugai town panchayat are dependent on this river for their drinking water supply. The public who use this polluted drinking water are being affected by viral fever and many other diseases, the MDMK claimed.

“After receiving our petition District Collector M Karunakaran assured us of speedy action on this issue,” Selvakumar said.
