Former BBMP Mayor Shanthakumari Chargesheeted by Lokayukta

BENGALURU: The Lokayukta police on Monday  filed a chargesheet against former mayor N Shanthakumari for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income.

Shanthakumari, who is contesting from Maruthi Mandir Ward in Vijayanagar Assembly constituency on a BJP ticket, is accused of amassing Rs 1.38 crore (46.90 per cent) worth of assets disproportionate to known sources of income. 

The investigation revealed that Shanthakumari, a three-time corporator, had purchased 33 properties valued at Rs 2.72 crore in and around Bengaluru, including some in the name of her husband.

Sources in Lokayukta told Express that Shanthakumari’s husband was running a fabrication business. Her total expenditure did not cross Rs 1.61 crore.

Lokayukta police began investigation after a person from Marathahalli filed a complaint against her in 2010 and the FIR was registered in 2011.

A raid was conducted on Shanthakumari’s residence and Nagarabhavi office and property belonging to her relatives in March 2012. During the raid, police seized Rs 20 lakh in cash and gold worth Rs 17 lakh.
