Piyush Bhandari and Tuhin Roy, founders of Jumpinggoose studio, explain how to make workspaces vibrant and fluid without splurging

From our online archive

Spaces define the vision and ideologies of people who breathe and operate out of that  ecosystem. Spaces that are vibrant, joyous and happy make human progression more  natural and fluid. Gone are the days of power driven cubicle type office settings. In today’s era, more and more companies are moving towards contemporary and off-beat  designs for their office spaces.  A modern workspace that is interactive and vibrant not only increases productivity but it also helps employees to collaborate, share and communicate better.

A contemporary office space design does not necessarily need elaborate budgets. The  right kind of ideas along with right kind of elements can make your office look like a million bucks without spending a million. While designing an office space it is crucial to arrive at a theme that matches your ideologies and yet suits your restricted budgets. The inspiration for a theme can be derived from the most mundane objects from your everyday life.

The Jumpinggoose Design Studio is a new age classic example of how to craft a mishmash of highly creative budget spaces. When we designed the Jumpinggoose studio, our aim was to create a space that was welcoming, open and reflects bright Indian colours and elements. The challenge was to match the budget with our brand theme.

To bring in the aspect of open workspace culture, we decided to move away from the  traditional cubicle type of setting.  Cubicle seating is not only boring but is also more expensive because of the number of elements needed to setup a cubicle workstation.  We decided on a pocket friendly and surprising alternative to the traditional cubicles.

Pushcarts or ‘Desi Thelas’ as it is popularly called was used as workstations for a portion of our office space.  The installations were customised in a way that was comfortable for the employees to work during long working hours. We installed 3 customized pushcart workstations at a cost as low as `18,000, with each pushcart station painted bright yellow with tinges of blue. The use of offbeat and unconventional artefacts like these adds an element of surprise to your work spaces.

If you are working under a tight budget, you should kiss goodbye to a traditional  conference room setup. The chairs, a big table and white boards are nothing but an extra expense. Replace the mundane with quirky and fun furniture. Create a lounge space with grass carpets and colourful sit outs and bean bags. The vibrant colours, the open light filled space adds

a touch of freshness to the setting. The lounge space that converts as a meeting area gives a casual, fun, functional and collaborative vibe.

Natural lighting is the key to a vibrant office design. Good lighting makes a big difference to your productivity and energy levels. To improve the amount of natural sunlight within your office, create an open environment by minimising the number of walls and dividers. Minimising on obstructions like dividers and cubicles not only saves you a penny but it also maximises natural lighting in the workspace.

Choosing the right colours for the wall will give a refreshing look to your workspace. There are many creative ways in which you can decorate your wall within a budget. Make interesting patterns by using colour blocking and sponging techniques. Little geometrical pattern is a great way to bring some life into your wall. If you are artistically inclined, you can attempt some graffiti art, as well.

A well-designed office space sparks innovation, creativity and improves productivity.  You can refurbish the overall look of your office space under a shoestring budget by drawing inspiration from everyday objects and combining it with the right ideas.
