All-party committee to monitor Indira Canteens

BENGALURU:Mayor Sampath Raj on Monday announced that an all-party committee would be formed to monitor operations of Indira Canteens amid allegations of corruption in its finances.The Mayor made the announcement at the BBMP Council meeting.

Sampath Raj assured that the committee would regulate cleanliness and the quality of food supplied, and changes would be made in the system, if needed.Opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy reiterated the allegations he had levelled a few days ago regarding finances of the canteen. Reddy alleged that though January 25, 2018, was a “Karnataka bandh,” records showed the canteens had still earned revenue on that day. BJP councillors said records of the number of visitors to the canteen were being inflated. Congress leader in the House M Shivaraj countered the allegations and said on the day of the bandh too the canteens were open and people had eaten in them.

Commissioner Manjunath Prasad said canteen operations could be changed based on the suggestions given. “As per directions of the police, we have installed CCTV cameras, security and compounds at every canteen,” he added.
