BENGALURU: A 75-year-old Bangladeshi patient, who was suffering from a recurrent infection, edema, and pain, which had impacted her quality of life, has been given a new lease of life by a city hospital. Doctors from Apollo Spectra Hospital, Koramangala, conducted an endovascular procedure on the patient from Dhaka, treating her chronic non-healing ulcers in the left leg and ankle region, which had been caused by multiple repetitive open and endovenous procedures for varicose veins.
A decade ago, the patient developed a chronic ulcer due to significant venous and perforator incompetence. Despite multiple surgeries performed previously, the condition persisted. Venous ulcers are commonly observed in the lower part of the leg and can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life, with potentially fatal consequences, said Dr Vinay Nyapathi, Senior Consultant Interventional Radiologist, who led the treatment.
Under ultrasound guidance, Dr Nyapathi accomplished a successful endovenous laser treatment for accessory veins, double great saphenous veins, and double short saphenous veins, all in a single session. Proper wound care management expedited the healing of the left lower limb ulcer within three weeks.
The patient underwent the endovenous procedure, which required no incisions, stitches or spinal anesthesia, only IV sedation, and was discharged the same day. Post-surgery, the patient experienced no pain, itchiness, or swelling, and has resumed walking for an hour every day without fatigue.
