16-year-old girl dies after being hit by Hyva truck in Odisha's Athagarh

Parida, along with her classmates, was returning home on her bicycle when the mishap occurred at around 1.30 pm.

CUTTACK: A 16-year-old girl was crushed to death on Tuesday after being run over by a speeding Hyva truck while she was returning home from college on her bicycle. The incident occurred at Chandbali square under Athagarh police limits.

Athagarh SDPO Biswajit Mohanty said the driver was detained and the vehicle seized. The deceased Annapurna Parida of Deopada in Dhenkanal was a Plus II first-year student of Gopabandhu Women’s College. Parida, along with her classmates, was returning home on her bicycle when the mishap occurred at around 1.30 pm.

Her classmate Sushreesmita Lenka of Iswar village also sustained injuries in the incident and is currently under treatment at Athagarh sub-divisional hospital.

Following the incident, irate locals staged road blockade demanding compensation for the deceased’s family. Athagarh MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain was also present at the protest site to extend his support. The road blockade was lifted at about 5 pm after the local administration provided Rs 20,000 from Red Cross Fund and assured to adequately compensate the bereaved family.
