Rs 1.50 cr golden mandapam at Ahobila mutt

CHENNAI: Craftsmen at the Ahobila Mutt are giving  final touches to a Rs 1.50 crore golden mandapam to be adorned by the presiding deity Shri Lakshmi Narasimha on December 7 when the 82nd thirunakshatram celebrations of the present seer Shri Narayana Yathindra Mahadesikan would be held at the mutt. He is the 45th seer of the Ahobila mutt.

According to its architect Sekar, the mandapam is covered by a thick layer of gold foils, arranged one on top of the other. The total weight of the gold foils used is 10 kg. It took 90 days and 20 craftsmen to complete the arrangement of the gold foils atop the copper base of the structure.

According to the general manager of the mutt, Desikan, the thirunakshatram celebrations would begin fr­om Tuesday and culminate on December 7 with the adorn­ment of the golden mandapam with the deity. Purification rituals for the golden mandapam would begin from Wednesday.
