CHENNAI: Actors Vijay and Bhaskar, producer A M Rathinam and director Perarasu on Wednesday expressed regrets for having shown lawyers in bad light the Tamil feature film 'Sivakasi'.

In their affidavits filed before Justice R Regupathi of the Madras High Court, they submitted that they had no intention of defaming the legal fraternity.

“If any part of the film directly or indirectly hurt the feelings of the complainants (advocates), I express my regret for the same,’’ the individual affidavits said.

When the judge asked S Prabakaran, president of Tamil Nadu Advocates Association, representing the aggrieved advocates, as to whether he was satisfied with the regret, he replied in the affirmative. He requested the judge to pass orders prohibiting depiction of the lawyer community in bad light in films in future.

To another query from the judge, Prabakaran said that the lawyer community had no representation on the Central Film Censor Board. Advocates would not hesitate to join, if their representatives were nominated as members of the Board, he added.

The judge reserved the orders on the petitions of Vijay and others seeking to quash the proceedings pending before various lower courts in the State.

The 13 petitions sought to punish the film crew for degrading the lawyer profession in 'Sivakasi'.
