CHENNAI: The first phase of medical counselling began on Monday with the allotment of seats to the top ten rankers and students from the special category. The top ten rankers were allotted their appointment orders for seats in medical colleges by the Minister for Health, M R K Pannerselvam at the Kilpauk Medical College.

 The Minister announced that for the first time 42 seats had been reserved for students from the Arundathiar community and the seats for Muslim students had been increased to 49 this year. Counselling for about 55 students from the special category was done on Monday. From Tuesday, counselling for the 300 students of regular category will begin from 9 am.

According to Sheela, secretary for medical counselling, out of the 42 seats allotted for physically challenged students, only 35 applications were received and finally only 14 students met the eligibility requirements.
