IT began in 2007. And over the last few years, it has grown in popularity.
The Park’s New Festival, organised by Chennai-based Prakriti Foundation is India’s only private performing arts festival. The main aim of the fest is to showcase new and emerging work from artists of India and of Indian origin who are at the edge of pushing boundaries.
What is new and emerging work? It is that which is created in the fecundity of modernity and which locates its context in such a way as to touch some emotional connect — through a smile, a laugh, a pause, a thought or a moment of introspection.
The fourth edition of The Park’s New Festival starts off with Sweet Sorrow, a contemporary dance performance combining dance, text, film and music. The performance plays with the intersection of universal icons and well-known clichés about loss and longing with the more obscure personal narratives of the same.
In the theatre performance Kashmir Kashmir, director Mohit Takalakar’s attempts to disperse the mist cloaking the issues related to the state.
Vidur Kapur’s stand-up comedy is based on the social commentary of a one-man culture clash. The musical puppet theatre Bollywood Bandwagon addresses everything, from impossible plots to the casting couch, to failed ambitions and fading stars in the industry. Directed by Anurupa Roy, Managing Trustee of Kat-Katha Puppets Arts Trust, it promises to be one rollicking ride on the Bollywood bandwagon.
Asima is a male vocal and percussion ensemble based in Trivandrum that combines elements from India’s rhythmic and melodic systems with harmonic traditions of western music All performances will be held at 7 pm at Museum Theatre, Egmore.
