With millions of fans glued to the IPL, a group of Chennai Super Kings fanatics plotted a novel way to inspire their heroes to victory. Rap troupe Triton Musicz have penned a song entitled, Chennai Kingz in an attempt to galvanize support for their beloved team. Written and performed by Saravanan Selvam, Naren, Hyde Karty, Vivek Raayen, Vasanth Taurus and Mahadaven, the song combines high energy Tamil and English rap verses, set to a hip-hop backbeat and some human beat-boxing thrown in for good measure.
Triton Musicz member Ruby Gayathri Babuji explained the inspiration behind the track. “After winning last season’s IPL, followed by the World Cup, Chennaites are waiting for a perfect hattrick from Dhoni and the CSK team. Cricket has already become a national fever influencing new people every day and we needn’t elaborate how much it means to people.”
The song, which is available to download free from the group’s website, was painstakingly put together over a month of hard work. “The studio was working 24/7. Artists had two pre recordings and a final recording” adds Ruby. “The lyrics have words from the local parlance and also uses the colloquial slang to describe the ethnicity and historical backgrounds of what cricket means to Chennai.”
The inspiring tune also has it’s own music video, shot and directed by the band, which is available on video sharing website Youtube. Shot on locations across the city, it illustrates Chennai’s love for the sport. “We had to ideate and bring in what cricket means to Chennai and the impact it leaves behind among the public. So we came out with a video of the daily city life and its’ favourite sport handled by people from different backgrounds.”
