‘Lokpal ineffective sans Lokayukta’

Terming corruption an evil, former Odisha Governor M M Rajendran has observed that the Lokpal bill, without the inclusion of Lokayukta, would render the bill ineffective.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the 544 birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji here on Wednesday, he said, the Lokpal bill is being compromised with several exclusions.

“Without Lokayuktas how would you counter corruption taking place in different states of the country?” he questioned. Pointing out at the functioning of Lokayuktha in Karnataka, he underlined that the body (Lokayukta) has the power to probe even a former Chief Minister of that State.

Apparently, he also listed out the crime record of the elected representatives at the national level. About 114 legislators, who have been accused of involving in serious crimes including murders were elected during the last five years in India, he claimed.

In her address, Advocate Bader Sayeed expressed concern over the arrest of two girls for their Facebook post, questioning the shutdown of Mumbai for Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray’s funeral. The innocent duo (girls) have made innocuous remarks, she stated.

Later, Radha Burnier, international president of The Theosophical Society in the city was conferred with the ‘Developers India’s Vibrant Indian Award.’
