Showers bring relief from soaring heat

Express News Service

Several parts of the city witnessed thundershowers and temperature dipped two degrees below normal on Tuesday.

Deputy Director General of Regional Metrological Centre Raj told Express that the thundershowers are due to the local thunder activity that happens in summer. Places like Porur, Guindy and Chinnamalai received good amount of rainfall.

Interestingly, there has also been a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. But Raj said the sudden showers as well as the pleasant weather since Monday is not directly connected to the formation of low pressure over Bay of Bengal.

“The showers in the city has been a relief for residents who had to endure extremely hot weather conditions as the mercury shot over 40 degree Celsius during the past week.

Raj forecasts that there will be rains in the next one or two days in and around Chennai. But to a query whether the low pressure would generate more rainfall in the city, Raj said it is too early to predict. Interestingly, as per the weather forecast, over West Central and North West Bay of Bengal lies a low pressure area. This may concentrate into depression during next 48 hours.
