A trademark quality of a Lata-Kishore duet is the perfect blend of mischief and melody. Be it S D Burman, R D Burman or Laxmikant-Pyarelal — the combination brought out the distinct qualities of both the voices to the fore.
Hum Aur Tum-Tum Aur Hum by Satrangi, a Chennai-based music group, lined up some of the most popular duets of the singers in the voices of Pramod Nair and Priyanka Singh.
Starting with Aaj madhosh hua jaye (Sharmilee), the evening set off on a three-hour journey to the golden era. Followed by Aapki Ankhon Mein Kuchh (Ghar) and Bhool gaya Sab Kuchh (Julie), the song list outlined the versatility of the combo.
With Tere mere milan (Abhimaan), Shokhiyon mein ghola (Prem Pujari) and Tera bina zindagi se (Aandhi), Hum Aur Tum turned out to be a seamless juggle between the many moods and hues of the artistes’ works.
As a part two to the group’s earlier show that presented Asha Bhosle duets with Kishore, the event on Saturday captured every facet of their collaboration with music composers. However, it was a majority of SDB and RDB numbers, yet again illustrating the long and deep association with the singers.
While popular numbers earned the applause from the audience just with the preludes (Gaata rahe mera dil from Guide), the show didn’t leave out rare songs like Ab ke saawan (Jaise ko Taisa).
Keeping the audience hooked was the host of the evening Uday Meghani, who belted out couplets as clues for the audience to guess the next number. Dropping hints like karwate, palak and salaam, it wasn’t an easy guess with the twists and turns in the poetry.
An innovative orchestra that experiment with various mediums (sand paper to produce the sounds of a chugging train) complemented the energetic singers who continued with unabated energy throughout the show. And as one of the members in the audience said, ‘It took you back in time. You may not know the language, but you know Rajesh Khanna and good music’.
