CHENNAI:Police insensitivity has come to the fore in the gang-rape probe of a speech-and-hearing impaired minor girl in a remote village in Krishnagiri district.

The first medical examination of the 16-year-old girl done by Dr S P Nandhini, a government doctor in Hosur, said the girl was “not raped” and her hymen was intact.

However, the second examination conducted on the directions of the High Court a few weeks later by Dr S Girija of the Government Dharmapuri Medical College and Hospital found that the hymen was not intact.

However, the investigating officer had asked the doctor “to explain in detail the exact features of the hymen”. To this Dr Girija candidly replied that she conducted the two-finger test, a practice banned by the Supreme Court several years ago.

When contacted by Express, Krishnagiri district Superintendent of Police, P Kannammal, defended the inspector’s actions saying that the official had the right to clarify her doubts.
