CHENNAI: A special court here convicted a 44-year-old man under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for transporting 35 kg of ketamine worth `35 lakh and sentenced him to nine weeks of rigorous imprisonment (RI) besides imposing a penalty of `35 thousand.
A team from the Narcotics Control Bureau, Chennai, conducted a search on January 13, 2011 and identified Dominic B Nair (44) and M Karthikeyan (45) alias Karthi being in possession of 35 kg of ketamine.
They had planned to pass the contraband to unidentified persons.
The personnel arrested them under sections 9 (A) read with 22, 28 and 29 of NDPS Act and remanded them to prison.
Subsequently, the duo obtained bail. During the pendency of the case, Nair had failed to attend the court proceedings and was absconding.
Therefore, the case was ordered to be split up on January 30, 2014, and the trial against Karthi commenced soon thereafter.
The special public prosecutor submitted that the accused had confessed to the charge that there was an attempt to commit the offence.
