MOP’s Mountain Musings

CHENNAI: Photography often becomes a candour medium wherein one captures moments from the mundane to the extraordinary by fomenting feelings on the onlooker. Each picture foreshadows a different story, a different perspective according to the personal observations and experiences from the life of the photographer and the way he or she sees the world.

MOP Vaishnav College for Women is bringing forth such a cornucopia of the ethereal and the realistic through the photography exhibition called ‘Positives 2015’. The exhibition was inaugurated by actor Sivakumar at the Lalit Kala Akademi on Monday.

The exhibition, which is organised by the department of visual communication showcases the photography skills of the students. Taking ‘Nepal and other frames’ as the concept, these students ventured on a six-day tour to Himalayas,  to confine the beauty of the mountains and the lifestyle of people in their lenses.

The exhibition features around 250 pictures chosen from a collection of 3,000 pictures shot by the students. As one looks at the pictures, we feel that these images aptly portray the beauty of the streets of Kathmandu, the crowds that throng the narrow streets and the best of what the city offers.

While it is the innocent smile of a child that caught the eye of one, the features that caught the shutterbugs are the waves, trees, monkeys, the fort-like buildings among many others. One of the recurrent visuals taken are the snow clad mountains, often surrounded by dark clouds. Positives 2015 features a compilation of snapshots of the students, which have been shot throughout the year across the city and from other places. This section encompasses portraits, monuments, landscapes, lifestyles, symbolic representations and other images which serve as a celebration of the cultural, racial and geographic diversity of the country.

The visual communication course, which was started in the year 1999, has had six editions of ‘Positives’ so far. As part of the curriculum, the students endeavour to take an array of photographs ranging from wildlife, historical monuments and art to capturing human emotions and others.

The organisers have also planned for an interactive session with cinematographer Santhosh Sivan during the session. The exhibition is on at Lalit Kala Akademi on Greams Road and will be open to the  public till January 25.
