CHENNAI: Some of us have still not gotten over the loss of Maggi from our diet, for it was a ready reckoner for a meal when we just couldn’t cook. And now that packets of noodles are being removed from the shelves of big and small stores, what would we do for an alternative?

Sameera, a college-going girl, said it would indeed be tough, because that was all she knew to cook, while  another girl, Akshaya, said, although there are other fast food options, nothing can replace the taste of a cup of steaming Maggi.

While college-goers are looking for an alternative, according to M Prabu, head, Department of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute University, something that is healthy and would more or less match the taste of Maggi and provide options for experimenting with vegetarian and non vegetarian sides is the idiyappam. Some of the varieties include egg idiyappam, mushroom pepper idiyappam and idiyappam biriyani, among others.
