Narrating Mythological Tales Through Dance

Express News Service

The bharathanatyam performance by dancer Narthaki Natraj, organised by the Indian council of Cultural Relations at Bharathiya Bhavan on Wednesday, conveyed a story through mere body movements and gestures.

Narthaki is a disciple of KP Kittappa Pillai, the descendant of ‘Tanjore Quartlet Brothers’.  Every aspect of her dance was surreal. It was a visual treat to watch her movements and expressions, which were graceful. The way she portrayed each mythological character with her facial expressions, made one fall in love with her aesthetic beauty.

She traversed different places, told different stories, and transformed into various characters through her dance.

She gave her interpretation to the mythology through her danceform, but made sure that the traditional aspect was kept intact. Some of the mythological characters that she depicted were Muruga, Kamakshi Amman, Brihadeeshwarar, among others.
