Cops Crack Barrel Murder Mystery, Arrest Three

CHENNAI: Three days after a man’s body was found in a barrel on the road side of Aranvoyal village in Tiruvallur, police arrested three persons including the mother of a woman who the victim Lakshmanan, allegedly had an illicit relationship with.

Lakshmanan, a resident of MGR Nagar was murdered by Venkatesan, Venkateshan’s father Rajagopal and Venkatesan’s mother Regena Usharani.

Investigation revealed that Venkatesan’s sister Praveena who is married developed a relationship with Lakshmanan.  Learning about their relationship, Praveena’s family members warned Lakshmanan to stay away from her. A few days ago, Venkatesan found Praveena and Lakshmanan together. Angered, he along with his parents executed out a plan to kill Lakshmanan.

On January 6, the trio invited Lakshmanan home and murdered him, placing the body in a barrel. They then hired a goods carrying auto telling the driver that they had to transport vegetables. As they reached the Chennai-Tiruvallur Highway, they dropped off the body along the road side.

Passersby, who saw an abandoned barrel on the roadside alerted police after a foul smell emanated from the barrel on Friday evening. The village administrative officer, police personnel recovered the barrel and found that the body bore several deep injuries resulting from being hacked. Police sent the body to the GH in Tiruvallur for postmortem.

Rs 23 Lakh Stolen

Nearly `23 lakh was stolen from a man near Red Hills on Monday. Police said Mahendran (38), of Padianallur, Balaji Nagar, had withdrawn `23 lakh from a local bank. While returning by car, a youth stopped him saying his car tyre was punctured. When Mahendran got off to check, the youth took the money and fled. Mahendran who owns a lorry booking office in Red Hills filed a complaint with police who are scanning CCTV footage. Police said the youth must have kept a tab on the man and followed him.
