Assistance for manual scavengers

CHENNAI: In an effort to rehabilitate manual scavengers, a one-time assistance of `40,000 and training was given to 170 persons by Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) and the city corporation on Monday.

An official release here said Kumar Jayant, Managing Director of TAHDCO and Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan, were present on the occasion. The beneficiaries are given self-employment training for a maximum of six months. The courses included computer, electrical and mobile phone repair training. They could also avail 30 per cent of their capital investment or a maximum of `2.25 lakh as subsidised loans through TAHDCO.
