CHENNAI: The heavy downpour on Monday, which left most areas waterlogged claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman who allegedly fell into waist deep rain water at Sandiappan Street off Konnur High Road on Tuesday morning.

Santhamma was returning from her son’s house at Sandiappan Street on Tuesday morning to her home on the same street, when she accidentally fell into the water and drowned, residents claimed.

Santhamma was a seller of tender coconuts near a temple. “Her house is located close to the Otteri Nullah. During the floods in 2015, that area was among the worst hit. Apprehensive of the rain, Santhamma decided to stay with her son. On Tuesday, she woke up late due and was headed home to get ready for work when the tragedy happened,”said a police source.

Her neighbours told the police that Santhamma would normally wake up early and start her business by 7.30 am as devotees visit the temple in the morning. On Tuesday, the locals spotted her body in the water and alerted Otteri police who sent it to government hospital for autopsy. However, the family members did not file a police complaint.
