CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has collected a total of Rs 2,040 crore as property tax for the financial year 2025-26 as of Tuesday evening.

At the start of the financial year, the civic body had set a target of Rs 2,020 crore which was later revised to Rs 2,300 crore in the revised budget estimates this year.

The deadline to pay property taxes without a fine ended on Tuesday. The collected taxes this year was also lower than the Rs 2,200 crore the corporation collected in the corresponding period last year.

A senior corporation official said the accurate collection figure would be available only by Wednesday morning.

“We expect to end this year’s collection at Rs 2,100 crore,” another official said.

They officials attributed the shortfall in collection to staff being redirected for election duty, affecting door-to-door collection. They added most of the awareness drives and pending dues notifications were only issued digitally due to shortage of resources.

With regard to professional tax, the civic body collected Rs 594 crore this year as compared to Rs 550 crore last year.
