Breast milk is widely recognised as the best source of nutrition for infants, providing the ideal balance of nutrients needed for healthy growth and development. While much attention is given to the baby’s needs, the nutritional health of the mother is equally important. Lactation is an energy-demanding process, and although the body prioritises milk production, it often does so by drawing upon the mother’s nutrient stores when dietary intake is inadequate.
Maternal nutrition matters
Many breastfeeding mothers consume inadequate amounts of essential nutrients. Common deficiencies include omega-3 fatty acids (particularly DHA), vitamin D, vitamin A, folate, vitamin B12, calcium, iron, and iodine. Vitamin D deficiency is especially common worldwide, even in sunny regions, making it an important nutrient to monitor during breastfeeding.
A mother’s diet influences the levels of several vitamins and nutrients in breast milk. Adequate intake or supplementation can improve breast milk concentrations of vitamins A, D, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, iodine, zinc, selenium, and omega-3 fats. However, nutrients such as calcium and iron remain relatively stable in breast milk because the mother’s body uses its own reserves to maintain milk quality, potentially increasing her risk of deficiency over time.
Importance of healthy fats
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, are vital for an infant’s brain and eye development. Consuming two servings of fish each week is one of the most effective ways to increase DHA levels in breast milk. Other dietary sources include eggs, meat, butter, and avocado. Breast milk is a living fluid that contains antibodies, enzymes, growth factors, and beneficial bacteria that cannot be replicated in formula. The benefits of breastfeeding extend well beyond infancy. Babies who are exclusively breastfed have a lower risk of ear infections, gastrointestinal illnesses, asthma, eczema, respiratory infections requiring hospitalisation, type 2 diabetes, childhood leukemia, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Longer durations of exclusive breastfeeding provide greater protection.
For mothers, breastfeeding is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth also improves mother-infant bonding.
Supporting successful breastfeeding
Exclusive breastfeeding is essential for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding alongside complementary foods. Along with regular medical follow-up, mothers should focus on consuming a balanced diet rich in protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy or suitable alternatives, and adequate fluids. Nutritional supplementation may be beneficial when dietary intake is insufficient or deficiencies are identified.
