NEW DELHI: Two minor siblings died after a fire broke out at their home in the Manohar Park area of west Delhi caused by a leakage from a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder, officials said on Monday.
According to the Delhi Fire Services, they received a call around 8:20 pm about a blaze at Manohar Park, near Ashok Park Metro Station. Two fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene.
By the time the fire crew returned from the site around 9:50 pm, it was confirmed that the fire originated from the LPG cylinder, resulting in three people sustaining injuries. The injured were rushed to Acharya Bhikshu Hospital by PCR personnel, the fire department added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer said a team from Punjabi Bagh police station also reached the spot to investigate.
Savita (34), the occupant of the house, told police that while she was cooking around 8 pm, nearby clothes caught fire. At that time, her son and two daughters were in the room. Savita and her 11-year-old daughter, Minakshi, managed to escape unharmed.
However, her elder daughter, Sakshi (14), and son, Aakash (7), got trapped in the flames. Upon hearing her screams, the landlord’s son and other tenants managed to rescue the children and rushed them to Acharya Bhikshu Hospital, Moti Nagar. However, both siblings succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead due to 100% burn injuries, the DCP said.
The children’s father, Lal Bahadur (40), a private security guard, was on duty at the time of the incident, police added.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at Makkar Hospital in the Laxmi Nagar area of east Delhi.
Delhi Fire Services officials said they received a call around 11:45 pm on Sunday about the blaze at Makkar Hospital, Priyadarshni Vihar, Laxmi Nagar. Four fire tenders were dispatched and the fire was brought under control by 12:15 am.
The fire reportedly involved a bed and a window air conditioner on the ground floor of the building. No casualties were reported in the incident, fire officials added.
