One dead, three critical after falling into sewer in Delhi's Ashok Vihar

According to the police, the men were engaged in sewer cleaning work for a construction company, which has been carrying out such operations in the area for the past several days.

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old man died and three others were hospitalised after inhaling toxic fume while cleaning a sewer in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar area, police said on Wednesday.

A PCR call was received on Tuesday at 11.36 pm that four people have fallen inside a sewer while cleaning it near Harihar Apartments, Ashok Vihar Phase-II.

Sewer cleaning work was ongoing in the area for the past several days.

"The deceased has been identified as Arvind, a resident of Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh. He was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where doctors declared him 'brought dead'," Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) Bhisham Singh said.

The other three, Sonu and Narayana, both from Kasganj, and Naresh from Bihar, were admitted to the ICU in a drowsy condition, he said, adding that their condition remains serious.

Soon after, a crime team inspected the spot. The manager of Brijgopal Construction Company has been called for inquiry.

A case has been registered under 106(1)/289/337 of BNS and sections 07 and 09 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013 at Ashok Vihar police station and investigation is underway.
