HYDERABAD: The Indian Railways is a forerunner in the adoption of latest technologies, maintenance and operations to suit the Indian conditions,” Sukhbir Singh, member (electrical) of the Railway Board, has said.
Participating as chief guest in the 51st annual day celebrations of Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications IRISET) at Lalaguda here Tuesday, Singh said that with the Railways adopting the latest technologies, the role of institutions like IRISET would be crucial. “I wish to see the Indian railways as number one in all respects,” Singh said.
South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager HK Padhee said the SCR would lend all necessary help in making IRISET the best institute in the world. He laid stress on using the latest technology with a view to making the railways more productive and cost-effective.
Prashant Shukla, chief operating officer of CMC, said in his keynote address that signalling and telecommunications played a vital role and IRISET could provide quality training. Board additional member (signals) CP Verma said that railways was adopting new and emerging technologies in signalling and telecommunication.
IRISET director V Balaram said the institute was performing a vital task of providing safety critical signalling systems and telecom facilities and was aptly recognised by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) as a leading training institution.
As many as 283 trainees from 19 countries including Syria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Tanzania, Turkey and Ghana have been trained by IRISET since 1962.
In view of its increasing importance, the Railway Board has decided to upgrading IRISET into a world-class institute and an action plan is being drawn in this regard. A new hostel with 50 rooms is being added to augment accommodation for trainees. Construction of a new building for expanding needs of labs is also being contemplated.
