VC appointment put on hold by High Court

Express News Service

A division bench of the AP High Court comprising acting Chief Justice P C Ghose and Justice Vilas V Afzulpurkar on Friday granted interim suspension of an order of a single judge directing the Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) and the state government to follow procedure prescribed in GO Ms No 14 dated Feb 20, 2010 for selection and appointment of a vice-chancellor to the varsity.

The bench, while hearing an appeal by the ANGRAU against the single judge order, told the Advocate General to ensure stoppage of process, if any, taken up by the government for filling the VC post.

The bench made it clear that it would decide the matter by having final hearing on next Friday (Dec 7).

It directed the registry to club the issue with other similar matters, including a public interest petition, for final hearing.

On Nov 15, a single judge granted the order while dealing with a petition by a retired professor M Devender Reddy of the university.

Meanwhile, university professor M Govind Reddy, in a public interest petition, requested the court to direct the authorities concerned not to appoint a vice-chancellor to ANGRAU without appointing a search committee and without giving an advertisement calling for applications to the post.
