1 lakh seats vacant after counselling ends

Nearly 1.05 lakh of the total 2.34 lakh seats in the engineering and pharmacy colleges remained vacant at the end of second and final phase of Eamcet- 2012 counselling for convenor quota on Tuesday.

 Only 542 fresh candidates obtained admissions in the final phase.

 In all, about 1.29 lakh seats have been filled in engineering and pharmacy colleges for the academic year 2012-13.

 The vacant engineering and pharmacy seats number 98,218 and 8,153 respectively under convenor quota.

 In addition, another one lakh seats are said to be vacant under the management quota.

 Electronics and electrical engineering remained the favourite among students with 38,522 of 61,190 seats filled in the two courses, followed by 25,827 seats in computer science and 22,006 in mechanical engineering.

 Shockingly, the number of colleges with less than five admissions increased from 18 to 25 after the final phase.

 Also, around 99 colleges had less than 30 admissions.

 Of about 1.34 lakh candidates, who were allotted seats during the first phase of counselling, about 1.15 lakh reported to the colleges.

 In addition to the existing seats, 760 new seats were sanctioned for the second phase.
