Tribal art gets a revival

Peruse through the Gond tribal art exhibition titled Dots and Dashes at the Kalakriti art gallery on July 28, from 11 am to 7 pm. The exhibition will showcase works of artists like Dhawant Singh Ukey, Dilip Shyam, Gariba Singh Tekam, Hiraman Urveti and others. The artists are from Bhopal and over 55 paintings on paper and canvas will be seen in the exhibition.

The Gond tribal community is one of India’s largest indigenous communities who express their quest for life through painted stories. The art form of dots and dashes by this community got a revamp after it was brought back in bright acrylic hues on paper and canvas by artists. The innovation and experimentation of this art form has led to it being recognised as a contemporary art form.

The dot and dash art of the Gonds which depicts illustrative stories of nature, mythical legends has found it’s way to museums in Paris, Tokyo and New York. The showcase at Kalakriti seeks to promote this art form of dots and dashes from the community. All the 11 artists are from Bhopal whose work will be shown at the gallery. Over 55 paintings on paper and canvas will be seen in the exhibition.
