SCR nets Rs 7.40 crore from penalties

The SCR detected and penalised 2.25 lakh persons for committing the offence of either ticketless travel or irregular travel.

Express News Service

The SCR, which undertook a series of checks against ticketless and irregular travel involving 2,600 ticket checking staff in all its six divisions last month, detected and penalised 2.25 lakh persons for committing the offence of either ticketless travel or irregular travel or traveling with un-booked luggage.

An amount of Rs 7.40 crore was realised from these ticketless and irregular travellers which is the highest-ever ticket checking earning for a single month on  SCR.

The ticket-checking earnings of Rs 7.40 crore during May surpassed the Railway Board’s target of Rs 6.98 crore set for the month by 5.7 percent. The number of cases detected during this month has shown an increase of 20 percent over the cases in May of the previous year. The ticket checking revenue netted is 23 percent more compared to May 2012.

The previous best for any month was during October 2012 when Rs 6.70 crore were realised towards penalty from 2,05,000 cases. The surprise checks carried out by the flying squads in the divisions and at the headquarters helped enhance the effectiveness of the ticket-checking  activities being carried out regularly at various stations and in trains on SCR with an aim to curb the menace of ticketless travel.
