Row over Cow Slaughter Ahead of Bakrid

Express News Service

HYDERABAD: Alleging that cow slaughter of cow was rampant ahead of Bakrid,  the Bharatiya Prani Mitra Sangh on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to police commissioners of Hyderabad and Cyberabad seeking strict action against those indulging in cow slaughter.

Jasraj Shrishrimal and Mahesh Agarwal of the Sangh said, “Cow slaughter is against the law. It is unfortunate that some people, in the name of festivities, slaughter thousands of animals. Even the Supreme Court stated that no exemption can be given for slaughter of cows and declared that it is not an essential religious requirement under the Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act 1977.”

Taking serious note of the situation, the city police has warned both groups involved not to take law into their hands. Admitting that tension prevails every year during the festival season, West Zone DCP V Satyanarayana told Express a meeting was conducted with members of the Go Rakshak Samithi and various slaughter houses.

“We asked them to inform the police next time they see a cow being slaughtered and have warned that strict action will be taken against those who take law into their hands,” he said, assuring that all measures are being taken to avoid communal tension.

Further, the DCP said, “We have also spoken to people from various slaughter houses and asked them not to bring cows to the city along with goats, especially during Bakrid, to avoid disturbances.”
