HYDERABAD: In a new shame for Hyderabad, the city has been ranked 275th in the Swachh Bharat rankings released on Saturday. The cantonment town of Secunderabad was marginally better at 191 among the 476 cities ranking which was released by the Ministry of Urban Development.

As many as 11 cities were surveyed in Telangana state but only Hyderabad and Secunderabad made it to the list.

Among the 28 State capitals, Hyderabad scored a low 22nd position. Smaller cities like Madurai, Trivandrum, Mangalore, Kozhikode, Puducherry, Gangtok and others have done better in sanitation practices.

The rankings are based on the extent of open defecation and solid waste management (SWM) practices in the cities. Mysore came on top with minimal open defecation and extensive adoption of solid waste management practices.

Officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation said the corporation failed to take any steps to deal with open defecation, open urination and solid waste management.

For the last two years, GHMC was planning to construct 2,000 public toilets but could not even construct 50 public toilets. Many of the toilets are in pathetic condition and many are not being used due to poor maintenance and lack of water.
