HYDERABAD: National Commission for Safai Karmachari Andolan president and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Bezawada Wilson visited the head office of Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board here on Thursday and discussed with managing director M Dana Kishore the action plan for elimination of human labour in the cleaning of manholes and sewers.

Despite the efforts made by the water board to eliminate human labour, many contractors and households privately engage labour who do not know proper means of undertaking such work leading to injuries and deaths.

In view of this, a large-scale awareness campaign in coordination with Safai Karmachari Andolan may be undertaken with the board’s support, Kishore said and requested Wilson also to plan a campaign against manual scavenging by holding a workshop for civil society organisations, social and human rights activists.

He wanted a workshop held on elimination of manual cleaning of manholes. He  said the citizen charts, monitoring committees, committees on social awareness, etc. would be involved in the campaign.
