HYDERABAD: Pedestrians are in for some relief as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has proposed the construction of a new subway between pillars 13 and 14 of PV Narasimha Rao (PVNR) Elevated Expressway on Mehdipatnam Road. With the proposed subway coming up near the busy Rythu Bazar, crossing the road will no more be a strenuous affair for pedestrians.
The subway or underground road has become a need-of-the-hour as many accidents involving pedestrians are taking place in the area. The city traffic police, for long, has been insisting the GHMC to construct a subway.
Around 1,500 to 2,000 pedestrians cross the road per hour on an average. A subway at the place would provide a hassle-free movement of pedestrians, GHMC officials told Express. The subway would be taken up on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and the project report has been submitted to the GHMC Standing Committee for approval.
Incidentally, the two existing subways on the busy Koti Road and RTC X Roads built in the 1980s are no more useful to the pedestrians due to lack of facilities. The GHMC has decided to improve the aesthetics by providing facilities which include ATMs, small kiosks etc. The subway is estimated to come up at a cost of `1.50 crore to `2 crore.
