HYDERABAD: In view of the drinking water being a precious commodity and its high cost, there is every need to reuse treated wastewater for all other purposes as much as possible, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board managing director M Dana Kishore has said.

Speaking at an event held here on Wednesday in connection with the World Water Day,  he called upon engineers to develop low-cost technologies suitable for the city to deal with re-use of waste water and called for awareness about this by board’s engineers, NGOs and students.

Kishore said water supply and sewerage system was in vogue at Harappa and Mohenjo Daro during Indus Valley Civilisation. Ever since, waste water has been being recycled and reused for agricultural purpose. Children, in particular, should understand the importance of conservation of water, he said.

The water that one receives at home in the city is brought from as far as 200 km away  from Krishna and Godavari rivers; and a kilo-litre of it costs `45 whereas it is supplied to consumers for `8.

GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy too laid stress on the importance of recycling water for various purposes.

Among others who attended the programme were HMWSSB executive director M Satyanaryana and G Rameshwara Rao, secretary of Institution Of Engineers (India)-Telangana chapter with whose collaboration the programme was held.

The water board also organised meetings on ‘Role of Resident Welfare Associations and Communities in Water Conservation and Strengthening Water Supply & Sewerage Services of HMWSSB’ at NGRI Auditorium, Habsiguda and at JNTU Seminar Hall, Kukatpally.
