KOCHI: Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor will inaugurate the Congress for Empowerment of the People-2009 organised by Janasree Sustainable Development Mission at Kaloor Renewal Centre on Saturday.

About 50,000 self-financing units have been formed in two years in the state as part of the efforts of the mission, of which former minister M M Hassan is the chairman. Janasree, a movement against unemployment and poverty, is engaged in micro-finance, micro-insurance, micro-enterprises, organic farming and energy conservation activities. Besides, it also takes up social, educational and cultural activities at the regional-level.

The mission has under its control a computerised office, 14 block union officers, over 100 mandalam sabhas, and 1500 Janasree units. The meeting will be presided over by M M Hassan.

Union Minister K V Thomas will inaugurate bank loan distribution programme.

The mission’s energy conservation programme will be inaugurated by UDF convenor P P Thankachan.

Award on outstanding performance in micro-insurance, micro-enterprises and organic farming will be handed over to the beneficiaries by KPCC general secretary Benny Behanan, K P Dhanapalan, MP, K Babu MLA and DCC president V J Poulose.
