KOCHI: A batch of students and teachers from Bhavans Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrikkakara, celebrated Children’s Day with a difference by helping underprivileged women on an economically backward island. About 300 students of classes VI-IX and their teachers raised Rs.20000 in two days selling various homemade food items at school. Snacks like vada, vegetable cutlet, samosa and banana fry were sold at a little higher price than normal.

“It was to inculcate the habit of sharing among the students,” said Maya Divakar Paliath, the zoology teacher who inspired the idea.

The project named ‘Design for Giving’ was also intended to promote healthy living habits by cooking and consuming vegetarian food. The amount collected was used to buy six sewing machines which were donated to the employment training centre at Kandanadu in Kothad Island.

The tailoring machines were given to six unemployed widows to help them earn their livelihood.

The handing over ceremony of the machines was conducted at the employment training centre at Kothadu the other day.

Teachers and students of Varuna Vidyalaya and locals in large number took part.
