Social networking is an entrenched phenomenon; scores (87%) higher than all-India average; Orkut (80%) is the favourite {scores higher than all-India average}.

Among other attributes youngsters in Kochi find ‘comfort’ in being an important attribute for career evaluation. IT is the preferred career option followed by Media and Entertainment.

Healthy penetration of gadgets is high among youngsters, like higher affinity to brands like Apple. Rahul Gandhi is their favourite politician. TCS polled over 10,000 school children between the ages of 12 and 18 in 11 cities across India during 2009-10 to understand the emerging trends amongst this important group. According to the survey, India’s youth is a group of confident, optimistic, career-minded and socially connected

individuals.

The survey shows that the youth is more likely to have a mobile phone than not, seamlessly move from fixed to mobile internet, spend more time online than ever before and have embraced social networks in a uniquely Indian way. Educationally, the grass is greener mentality of studying abroad seems common but many are considering the value of studying in India as well. And even at a relatively young age, India’s school children are thinking about new skills and salaries when they consider future careers.
