KOCHI: After a gap of three decades, the KSU has won the post of Students Union chairman at Ernakulam Maharaja’s College.

However, the SFI retained the upper hand in the district by winning in 28 colleges out of 31, SFI district secretary Lijo Jose said.

The victory of Jino John as chairman at Maharaja’s College, after a gap of 30 years, was a strong reply to those propagating fascism and campus violence, KSU sources said.

Venu Rajamani, who is now a top official in the External Affairs Ministry, was the last person who had won the chairmanship 30 years ago on KSU ticket. The victory has set the process of democratic functioning of the unions on the campus, the sources said. The college politics was under the monopoly of a particular union during the last 30 years when the others were denied the right to express their opinion, the sources said.   Reacting to the performance of the KSU at Maharaja’s College, NSU national president Hibi Eden said the election result was a reflection of the attitude of the new generation to fascism, communalism and political violence on campuses.

Meanwhile, in the other elections, the SFI candidates swept all the seats in 15 colleges, Lijo Jose said. “The landslide victory once again underlines the importance of the slogans raised by the SFI. We will celebrate victory day in all the colleges in the district,” Lijo Jose said.

While some of the college managements  adopted presidential system for the elections, most of the colleges followed the parliamentary method. In Saint Albert’s College, Midhun Ajayan and Nafin K S were elected chairman and general secretary, respectively.

Githun Sanjith was elected chairman of Chinmaya Vidyapeet, Kochi.  Vivek Kotecha and Aleena Mathew were elected general secretary and vice-chairperson, respectively.
