KOCHI: Paving way for a hassle-free traffic along the Vyttila-Ernakulam South stretch, the bridge at Kadavanthra may be commissioned by the end of April. After completing most of the levelling work of the approach road to the bridge, the Corporation authorities have taken measures for road surfacing.
Along the stretch from Vyttila-Ernakulam South, Elamkulam bridge and South overbridge are the areas where the width of the road is less than 19 metres. It was to make Sahodaran Ayyappan (SA) Road a four-lane road that a new bridge was commissioned at Elamkulam. “Once the bridge at Elamkulam is complete, the SA Road can be made into a four-lane road. The work of the bridge can be completed by the end of April,” said an official with the Kochi Corporation. The Corporation had allotted `4 crore for the construction of the bridge and the approach road under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP).
After much delay, the four-lane work of the road, except along the short stretch near Elamkulam bridge, was
completed.
In a bid to ensure the quality of the road, the work was carried out following international specifications stipulated by the Indian Road Congress (IRC) with a guarantee of five years.
The total estimate for the repair work of the road was `10 crore.
When the construction of the railway overbridge (ROB) at Atlantis is over, traffic can be diverted through the ROB. So the bottleneck at the South ROB can be avoided.
But the authorities are still not sure when the construction of the ROB at Atlantis will start.
The state government has earmarked budgetary allocation for the reconstruction of the South ROB as well. But no measures have been taken so far to start the work of the bridge.
