Kunti Karna: the mother-son relation

Express News Service

The play, ‘Kunti-Karna’ is known for its excellent choreography, convincing fight sequences and wondrous performances by all the actors.

It is a visual adaptation of the traditional relationship between mother and son and has been adapted from ‘Kunti & Karna’ by Rabindranath Tagore as well as  ‘The Mahabaratha’ by Jean-Claude Carrière.

Kunti Karna begins with the abandoning of a new born in the river by a young princess, and shows the growth of the baby into a full fledged warrior who engages in a fierce rivalry with the princess’ legitimate son. The climax is the mind-numbing scene of the mother finding her long-lost son killed on the battlefield. The play has been directed by Koumarane Valavane.

The actors include Vasanth Selvam, who has performed with the Indianostrum Theatre since 2007, and is one of the co-founders of the troupe. Sravanthi is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer from Kalashetra, Chennai, and has been actively involved with Indianostrum theatre since 2012. Raja is a professionally trained performer in Kalaripayattu and holds a Diploma in Movement Arts & Mixed Media from the Attakkalari Center for Movement Arts. Avinash, Naveen Kumar, and Kalieswari Upasana Saraju complete this cast.

The director Valavane, who lived in France, for many years, was an actor in ‘‘Theatre du Soleil’, which is directed by the acclaimed director Ariane Mnouchkine. But, interested in Indian mythology, he returned in 2007 and started the ‘Indianostrum’ theatre.

‘Kunti Karna’, which is of 80 minutes duration, has been staged all over India, and has been well received. It will be staged at the JT Pac on Sunday, September, 29,  2013 at 7 p.m. For more details and reservations contact 9349528057, 9349528107/ www.jtpac.org
