A workshop on Thoracoscopy and video-thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), commonly known as keyhole chest surgery, was held at KIMS Hospital .The workshop was inaugurated by Dr K Poulose Jacob, Vice-Chancellor of Cusat. The workshop included lectures and hands-on training in medical thoracoscopy for chest physicians and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for thoracic surgeons.
Delivering the inaugural speech, Dr Jacob spoke about the relevance of keyhole surgeries and the importance of making common people aware about the modern techniques available in this regard.
The workshop also discussed diagnosis and curative treatment for patients suffering from lung cancer, tuberculosis, chest trauma, burst lungs and fluid collection in lungs. Conducting open surgery of the chest is complicated, while the keyhole procedure is simpler and helps in quick recovery, the workshop stated. The workshop was conducted under the leadership of Dr Nasser Yusuf, cardiothoracic surgeon. The other guest faculty members included Zameer Ali Khan, Department of MITS, Medanta Medicity, Gurgaon, and Indirakumari, former HOD, Pulmonology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences.
The session was chaired by C H Raheem, executive director, KIMS Hospital. M Mohan, Jose T Pappanachery, medical director, KIMS, Priyaranjini, Medical Superintendent, KIMS, also took part in the workshop.
