MUMBAI: In a novel initiative, transport department officials have started spreading anti-honking message in Mumbai from Monday. The initiative aims at less-noisy Mumbai by appealing the conscience of the people.

“Namaste! We are from Transport Department of Maharashtra. We request you Not to Honk. Our city is too noisy. Lets make it peaceful,” in the request that these officials are making to motorists on the traffic signals. They are also distributing leaflets that carry a one-line message - “Noise is Pollution & Pollution is a crime of 21st Century. Stop Honking. Peaceful Mumbai. Please do not litter. Clean India.”

“Some 300 officials participated in the initiative on the inaugural day. We would like more and more citizens groups to come forward and own this initiative,” Principal Secretary of the Transport department Manoj Saunik told The New Indian Express.

The anti-Honking drive will be a peaceful one with no fines being imposed, but with an aim to appeal to the good conscious of the motorists.

The drive will be carried out in suburban Mumbai between December 11 to December 18. During this drive officials from the RTO with their flying squad teams shall be stationed at the traffic signals.

These officials shall only interact with the motorists who are at the traffic signal when the signal has turned red, hand over the pamphlet and urge them not to honk. The message on the pamphlet will be in Marathi, Hindi and English, he added.
