THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Ever seen a wild ginger or a really wild orchid? The special pavilion for wild flora at the ongoing Flower Show at Kanakakkunnu has a number of such flowers, including the wild tulsi.

Thursday was a day of competitions at Kanakakkunnu, especially for housewives and commercial growers. The flower arrangement competition had some exquisite arrangement of flowers in various types of containers. The prize for the arrangement of rose flowers went to Rekha S from Rishimangalam.

The top place for flower arrangements in both shallow container and floating arrangement went to Mini Mathew of Nalanchira. The top places for dry flower arrangement were secured by Elizabeth Mary of Nalanchira and Rakhi Alex of Poojappura.

The Challenge trophy for annual flowering plants was bagged by the Secretariat. The Secretariat also won the Janaki Memorial Challenge trophy for the best display of flowering plants.

The Krishnan Nair and Sons Rolling Trophy was bagged by Sathish of Ooruttambalam for his spectacular display of bonsai plants. The CO Karunakaran Memorial Trophy was secured by Hemalatha Ramakrishnan of Priya Roses. By winning maximum points in the ‘B category roses’, Saraswathy Varma of Devaswom Board bagged the HAK Rolling Trophy.

The winners of the painting competition in the LP section were A Mahidar (first prize), V S Sandra (second prize) and Akash K Anil (third prize). The winners in the UP section are Vinod M (first prize), Soumya V N (second prize) and Shikha Shivaraman (third prize).

The winners in the high school section are Akhil Murali (first prize), Shilpa Shivaraman (second prize) and Anjana Mahesh (third prize).

As the flower show completes a week, as many as 1.25 lakh persons visited the show, including 25,000 students.
