THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A petition was filed before the Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge (Vigilance) here on Thursday demanding a probe against Kerala Congress leader and former Minister for Irrigation T M Jacob on charges of corruption to the tune of Rs 8.71 crore, while he was a minister.

The petitioner P K Raju, a social activist, in his petition stated that T M Jacob and three other parties, including the Chief Engineer of Kerala Water Authority, the Executive Engineer, Public Health Division and the Director of State Sustainable Urban Development project, were involved in corruption with regard to Theerapadhom Project, a project to supply water to areas under Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation.

Through the documents acquired exercising the Right to Information Act, the petitioner had learnt that the Rs 10.15-crore project, which started in 2005 had to be stalled after functioning for about two years.

During those years the pipes used in the project burst 58 times which caused a surplus maintenance cost of Rs 19.5 lakh.

It was also learnt by the petitioner that the pipes made in Tamil Nadu were rejected by the TN Govt itself. Vigilance Judge S Jagadees posted the hearing on the petition for March 14.
