THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If things go as planned, the garbage-choked Amayizhanjan canal will be cleaned with public participation and Vilappilsala, synonymous with waste management gone awry, will be the venue for a ‘green tourism project’ this financial year.

The District Planning Committee (DPC) has cleared 2018-19 annual plan proposals of the city corporation worth R328.28 crore which includes, among other proposals, a slaughterhouse at Kunnukuzhi, the Mayor’s Bhavan, the Shangumugham Art Gallery and a new block for the main office of the civic body at Palayam. For the production sector, the DPC has cleared proposals worth R34.18 crore, service sector R139.73 crore and infrastructure R134.37 crore, Mayor V K Prasanth said.

Since the plan has been cleared this early in the financial year, the corporation will be able to ensure smooth implementation of schemes and their completion on time, he said. The DPC has also cleared a R42.51 crore proposal for housing schemes under the LIFE Mission and sanitation and water conservation schemes worth a total Rs 33.61 crore.

Other major allocations include R14.1 crore for the women-centric schemes, R9.5 crore for children and differently-abled sections and R7 crore for the aged. Thrust areas in the annual plan include installation of aerobic bins, kitchen bins,  source-based waste disposal schemes and sewerage projects.

According to the Mayor, the projects lay thrust on service sectors, waste disposal and sanitation and healthcare and education of children. Hi-tech classrooms for schools in the coastal areas, walkways and cycle tracks, solar power projects, friendship centres for the differently-abled, and women-centric projects like cotton sanitary napkin manufacturing unit and ‘she-lodge’ also have been cleared by the DPC. There is also a plan to hold weekly markets for women at the ward-level. The corporation plans to tie up with the Kudumbasree for the project.

In healthcare, the proposals that have been cleared include a dialysis unit, a mobile centre for the diagnosis of lifestyle diseases and a financial assistance programme for children diagnosed with type-one diabetes.

Sports Team
The city corporation proposes to form sports teams. This, in fact, is one of the proposals cleared by the DPC for the 2018-19 financial year. The corporation also plans to have model libraries in the education and sports sectors. As part of the general education protection mission, the civic body will also launch a spoken Hindi programme in schools.
