VIJAYAWADA: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to AP and Tamil Nadu seeking reports within four weeks on a complaint drawing the body’s notice to girls and women being offered to Goddess Mathamma in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas. The NHRC in its notice said the custom bore semblance to the banned devdasi system which is still secretly practised in some parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The human rights body observed that the allegations made in the complaint about the continuance of the practice was serious in nature and, if true, amounted to violation of human rights including rights to life.
